Bistable solenoid valves  power supply pulsating 120V direct current, can be positive or negative. When the pulsating dc voltage of different polarity is applied to the solenoid coil, the spool will move in different directions. When power is stopped, the spool will stop at the end of the movement. There is only body and coil inside the  bistable solenoid valve , so the volume is smaller than that of unistable solenoid valve. In addition, when the spool is in any state, no power is required, so the power consumption is very small.

Valves operated by  hydraulic solenoid coil  are often used in agricultural irrigation systems. In this case, a relatively cheap small size solenoid is used to turn on or off a small front pilot valve, allowing a small amount of water to apply hydraulic pressure to the piston. The latter is mechanically coupled to the main valve and has sufficient force to switch the main valve.
